Job Description

This is a non-partisan position, and the successful candidate will be expected to remain free from political party affiliation, bias, or designation for the duration of the appointment.

Salary Range: $47,648 - $79,741

Telework: This position works on-site in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol during the legislative session. Potential for hybrid during the Interim.

Reports to: Director of Senate Information

Position Summary

Assist the Director of Senate Information in the duties of the Senate Information Office. Provide information, documents, and assistance to Senators, Senate personnel, lobbyists, press/media, and the public. Produce publications as requested by supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide answers to questions about the Senate from lobbyists, press/media, and the public.
  • Assist in the creation of numerous Senate publications, including election directories, Green Books, Red Books and staff directories.
  • Assist in maintaining content on the Senate's Internet site.
  • Assist in the State Fair activities.
  • Prepare and produce items related to the legislative session.
  • Print Senate bills, amendments, and conference reports as needed.
  • Organize Senate floor session paperwork to provide easier access for Senators, Senate personnel, lobbyists, press/media, and the public.
  • Post notices about session recesses and adjournments via the Senate Gold Page system.
  • Monitor nonpartisan Senate social media accounts and assist in the production of social media content, including live posts during floor sessions.
  • Research scheduled or taken actions by the Senate as requested by Senators, Senate personnel, lobbyists, press/media, and the public.
  • Provide roll-call votes of Senate bills and amendments as requested by Senators, Senate personnel, lobbyists, press/media, and the public.
  • Assist the Senate Intern Program Coordinator with duties related to the Senate Intern Program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Senate Information and the Secretary of the Senate.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in public administration, public policy, political science, communications, business administration, history, or related field of study.

OR

Minimum of one year of work experience in a legislative setting performing legislative process communication, or related.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working understanding of the Minnesota legislative process.
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign software.
  • Working knowledge of Minnesota geography.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with Senators, Senate personnel, lobbyists, press/media, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate complex subject matters in a non-complex manner.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Senate personnel.
  • Ability to work long hours during the legislative session.
