Job Description

To say that college is busy is an understatement. You will have your classes, homework, internships, group projects … The list can go on.

But you will also have some downtime. Unlike high school, you won’t be in class all day, every day. The beauty of college? You get to make your own schedule, finding time between classes for studying, homework, and extracurriculars. How should you spend that precious downtime?

Here are some ideas:

Meet people in your residence hall.

In Carthage residence halls, it’s common to see a long hallway of open doors. Students leave their doors open so hallmates can stop by and hang out. Go introduce yourself to your neighbors. Once you get to know people, the options are almost endless. Open Netflix and watch a movie. Connect that second controller to the PS4 and see who’s better at Madden. Head outside and start up a volleyball game, or do something like this if you get enough people together.

Explore Kenosha.

We know campus is beautiful, but living on campus entails so much more than what you’ll find on our 80 acres. Living on campus means that Kenosha will be your home for four years and there’s no shortage of things to do. Be careful if you engage in the eternal debate of Big Star vs. The Spot, though. We’re pretty sure friendships have been forever altered depending on what side you pick. (Just kidding … kind of.)

Attend CAB Events.

Does this look awesome to you? Of course it does! It’s one of the many events the Carthage Activities Board (CAB) organizes for students. Running into another person encased in a plastic bubble at full speed not your thing? That’s totally cool! CAB shows movies twice a week in the Campbell Student Union Auditorium. They also bring in comedians, musicians, and hypnotists; organize snow tubing trips; run bingo games. You know what? We’re going to stop there because if we listed all the things CAB does, you’d be reading this all day. Instead, we’ll just link you to the CAB Facebook page and you check out all the amazing things CAB does there.

Check out the Lake.

Carthage is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the lake has the mysterious power to make even mundane things amazing. Reading page after page for class in your residence hall room or in the library can sometimes be a drag. Do it outside on the lake? It magically becomes transcendental. Moving rocks and tree branches in your parents’ backyard can be a tedious chore. On the lake? You’ll do both those things in order to build a fort. Getting up at the crack of dawn on a school day can be the bane of any high school student’s existence. At Carthage, your class may start at 9:30, but you may want to get up before the sun just to check out the amazing sunrises.

Join a Student Org.

Carthage is home to more than 130 student organizations, so there’s definitely one out there that will fit your interest. Love Pokemon? Join Carthage Pokemon League. Love ultimate frisbee? Join Ultimate Frisbee Club. Want to rock out? We have the Metal Music Club. Want to give back to the community? We have a ton of service organizations. Interested in Greek life? We’ve got you covered there too. Check out our list of clubs on The Harbor, Carthage’s online involvement platform, and you’re sure to find one (or nine) that you belong in.

Support Carthage athletics teams.

About a third of Carthage students are involved in athletics. That means a third of your classmates need your vocal cords to get fried by cheering them on. There are 27 NCAA varsity sports and a coed competitive esports program, so whether it’s basketball, football, water polo, cross country, lacrosse, bowling, or one of the many other sports on campus, there’s almost assuredly a game, match, or meet happening every day.

Explore the Windy and Cream Cities.

Everything above is great, but sometimes you just want to skip town. Luckily there are two major cities a hop, skip, and a jump away. Chicago is home to world-famous architecture, renowned museums, and top theatre and music events. Not to mention Wrigley Field, home of the World Champion Chicago Cubs. Just hop on the Metra’s Union Pacific/North Line from Kenosha and enjoy America’s third-largest city. If Chicago is the “Second City,” consider Milwaukee a close third. Milwaukee is just an hour’s drive north of campus and offers art, architecture, theatre, concerts, great restaurants, and a variety of summer festivals including SummerFest.

Nothing.

No, seriously, nothing. The four years at Carthage absolutely fly by. On the academic side, there are papers, exams, labs, theses, and presentations. On the social side, there’s everything we listed above and much, much more. So sometimes you’re just going to want to decompress and that’s totally fine (and even encouraged)! Luckily for you, we have one of the best places on the planet to just … be.
