Position Title: Police Officer - Entry Level
The Village of Winthrop Harbor Police Department is currently accepting applications to build an eligibility list for full-time entry-level Police Officer positions.
Application Process:
Deadline: All entry-level candidates must complete testing through the National Testing Network (NTN) and submit an application with the Village of Winthrop Harbor by October 14, 2024.
Applications can be completed online and submitted in person at the Winthrop Harbor Police Department, 830 Sheridan Rd, Winthrop Harbor, IL 60096.
Candidates will be tested on three portions: Video, Reading, and Writing. An average score will be calculated, and the Winthrop Harbor Police Commission has set a cutoff score of 70%. Scores will be available to view in your NTN account within 2-3 days.
Requirements:
Complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) to be considered for the position.
Complete the virtual interview by the close date.
Salary Information:
Starting pay: $67,121
After 12-month probation: $72,734
Top pay after 3 years: $99,427
Salary increases pending contract acceptance by the union.

Job Requirements:
Age: Must be at least 21 and under 35 years old, with special considerations for military service.
US Citizenship: Yes, or legally allowed to work in the US.
Education: High school graduate or GED.
Driver's License: Must have a valid driver's license.
Vision: Correctable to 20/20, with normal peripheral vision and the ability to see in color.
College: Preference points are available for college education.
Experience: Not required but preferred.
Necessary Certifications:
Candidates must obtain a Physical Agility Test Card (POWER Test) from NIPSTA, Joliet Junior College, Triton College, or other ILETSB-certified physical testing facilities, dated no more than one year before the application date.
Hiring Process:
Submit the Village of Winthrop Harbor police officer application online. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
Pass the written exam and complete an interview with the board of fire and police commissioners to be placed on the initial eligibility list.
Education and military points will be added to create the final eligibility list.
As positions become available, candidates will undergo background investigations, including polygraph exams, reviewed by the board of fire and police commissioners.
Candidates receiving conditional offers of employment must pass a psychological assessment, physical exams, and drug screening.
The Village of Winthrop Harbor is a drug-free workplace, including marijuana. Candidates are subject to pre-employment drug screening, physical exams, and background checks after receiving a conditional offer.
Disqualification Criteria:
No felony convictions.
Misdemeanor convictions may disqualify applicants as outlined in 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7(c).
Candidates may not be prohibited by any court or federal/state law from carrying a firearm.
Must possess or be eligible to receive a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification Card.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the time of appointment and possess a valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent.
Applicants must be in good health, possess good moral character, and have no adverse police record. They must be physically strong, agile, able to handle aggressive situations, work under adverse weather conditions, think quickly in emergencies, and possess general intelligence and emotional stability.
Preference Points:
Veteran's Points: Applicants with at least one year of honorable military or naval service may receive 5 points. Proof of service must include Military Form DD-214 and evidence of honorable discharge.
Educational/Experience Preference Points: Applicants with an associate's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college may receive 5 points, provided the applicant has not received veteran's preference points. A certified transcript must be included as proof.
Note: Veterans' and educational preference points are not cumulative.
