Position, Department: Museum Guard, Advancement & Government Affairs

Type of Position: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule, Hours per week: varies, 12 hours per week

Pay Range: $15.00 - $18.20 and determined based on relevant years of work experience.

Position Summary:
  • Welcome guests to the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (NMOCA) and provide information on current exhibitions or special events.
  • Observe visitors within NMOCA to ensure protection of artworks on view.
  • Maintain order in assigned areas by informing guests of Museum Rules/Policies in a confident, calm, and friendly manner.
  • Direct visitors to galleries, restrooms, and other points of interest.
  • Successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Registrar.
  • Must have weekday and occasional evening availability.

Required Qualifications:
  • Some post secondary education or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be physically able to respond quickly to visitor issues.
  • Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time while remaining alert.
  • Must have excellent customer service, written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ideal candidates will have prior museum guard and/or customer service experience, a desire to be part of a team during exciting exhibitions and programs.
  • Current or previous JCCC student preferred.
  • Current students majoring in studio art, art history, or art education preferred.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Observe and monitor visitors throughout the museum and galleries to maintain order and secure conditions for visitors and staff.
  • Perform security patrols to ensure protection for the museum and its contents from potential losses, vandalism, or theft.
  • Complete all opening and closing procedures without error.
  • Provide information and direct visitors to galleries, restrooms, information desks, and other points of interest.
  • Welcome visitors to the museum and provide information on current exhibitions and permanent collections.
  • Proactively convey to visitors the museum safety requirements and rules.
  • Address unsafe behavior in a confident, calm, and friendly manner.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain a professional demeanor with coworkers and departmental leaders.
  • Respond to emergencies per defined departmental protocols.
  • Prepare incident reports as necessary.
  • Observe and report any irregularities, such as fire or water hazards.
  • Coordinate with Campus Services, Campus Police, fire, or other emergency response personnel in incidents affecting the museum.
