Job Description

NYU Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools, through its Technical Assistance Partnership ("TAP") for Equity funded by the Office of Special Education at the New York State Education Department ("NYSED"), is seeking a Senior Project Associate to provide coaching, technical assistance, and content development on effective practices in New York State that inform the relationship between teaching, learning, social identity, and cultural context. This role will provide support to other entities within the NYSED Office of Special Education (OSE) Educational Partnership , including the other Technical Assistance Partnerships, Regional Partnership Centers ("RPCs") Early Childhood Family and Community Engagement ("FACE") Centers and School-age FACE Centers.

Position Summary:

The Senior Project Associate will provide training and technical assistance in a variety of key educational areas to the "Partnership" related to Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE), special education, bilingual special education, instructional practices, curriculum, family and community engagement, among others and how each area intersects with race, equity, ability, language, and culture. The Senior Project Associate must be a self-driven self-starter and will be responsible for learning Partnership content, developing relationships, and building capacity in order to meet the project deliverables. The position will be remote/hybrid and requires regular travel throughout New York State.

Principal Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Full-Time Senior Project Associate to support our team in the following ways:

Provision of Coaching and Technical Assistance to Assigned Regions (45%)

  • Provide quality effective training, coaching, and technical assistance support to the Partnership, and meet project deliverables , including but not limited to:

    • Supporting 3-4 assigned regions, including timely, efficient, responsive communication, execution of scope of work, and completing designated documentation of work.

    • Delivering required amounts of virtual and in-person coaching for each assigned region annually.

    • Reviewing existing training materials and resources to prepare for coaching sessions.

  • Liaise with Special Education Technical Assistance Partnerships, RPCs, FACE Centers personnel before, during, and after trainings and meetings.

  • Develop effective relationships with partnering Special Education Technical Assistance Partnerships, RPCs, and FACE Centers.

  • Disseminate timely, relevant, and responsive information to stakeholders, including NYSED and Partnership stakeholders (e.g., RPCs, FACE Centers).

  • Work closely with their assigned regional teams to identify needs for coaching, professional development, and technical assistance, as directed by NYSED, and delivering to all members of those regional teams. 

  • Serve as a specialist on disproportionality in general and special education and equity, culturally responsive sustaining education, bilingual special education, education reform, among other education areas. 

Development and Dissemination of Training and Technical Assistance Content (35%)

  • Collaboratively plan, develop and deliver webinars and hangouts tailored to specific specialist groups or open to the whole Partnership, as appropriate to the content.

  • Review and develop materials for the provision of professional development to be used by RPCs, FACE Centers and MTSS-I Center to train stakeholders (families, educators, community providers, etc.).

  • Create quality responsive training and technical assistance content, and resources to adapt to partners? needs and adhere to the training and technical assistance content quality assurance and 508 compliance guidelines. 

  • Follow NYSED website guidelines for dissemination of training and technical assistance content and resources, including the reviewing and submitting of relevant content to NYSED.

  • Collaboratively support in developing and implementing the annual statewide meeting with TAP for Equity team.

  • Stay up to date with current research, district initiatives and the national dialogue around issues regarding equity, disproportionality, special education, race/racism work to effectively support partners with technical assistance and training.   

Team Problem Solving and Collaboration (20%)

  • Coordinate and collaborate effectively with team members, including Metro Center team and Partnership team members. 

  • Experience/ability working collaboratively and problem solving in a blended team-based approach.

  • Effectively problem solve and consult with team members on issues that arise with partners.

In compliance with NYC?s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000-$95,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Required Experience: Must meet the required experiences 

  • Master?s degree or higher in Pre-K-12 education, special education, psychology, education administration, or social work.

  • At least 5 years of experience working in New York State public schools, with at least 1 year of experience providing professional development and technical assistance to schools and working with racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse students.  

  • Experience working in PreK-12 special education.

Required Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Substantive knowledge on special education practices, policies, and procedures, which may include disproportionality in special education outcomes and disciplinary outcomes; literacy, mathematics, and/or behavioral interventions; race and equity in schools; language equity in schools, and; knowledge of culturally and linguistically responsive-sustaining education, including implementation of the NYSED CRSE Framework.

  • Familiarity with implementation science and systems change in the field of education.

  • Knowledge in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a must . 

  • Must be a self-starter, self-directed , and innovative around ideas in organizational capacity building, coaching, and training approaches.

  • Creative and independent thinker. 

  • Capacity to effectively collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including external partners.

  • Able to work under pressure, time constraints, track progress of project implementation and deliverables . 

  • Proven ability to effectively work and collaborate across differences, such as race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, culture, and demonstrated competency to engage in and facilitate conversations about racism and systemic oppression.

  • Available to travel 40% of the time . 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • Pre-K-12 teaching and coaching experience is preferred

  • Able to make a 2 year commitment.
