Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Reports to crime scenes as directed.
  • Determines the best methods for capturing and preserving the evidence.
  • Responsible for detecting, collecting, and preserving evidence.
  • Responsible for photographing the scene and preparing detailed crime scene diagrams and written reports.
  • Performs chemical tests and fingerprinting.
  • Attends postmortem examinations as required.
  • Responsible for crime scene management to include crime scene area.
  • Exchanges information with appropriate personnel regarding evidence collected at crime scenes.
  • Logs and maintains all property in property room.
  • Testifies in court regarding evidence and findings.
  • Orders supplies, materials, and equipment required for effective operation of crime scene management.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Manages special projects.
  • Report to work as scheduled or directed.
  • Perform other duties as instructed and assigned.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of various types of evidence found at crime scenes.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of evidence collection and preservation.
  • Ability to collect and preserve evidence from crime scenes.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in utilizing and applying the principles, tools, materials, techniques and procedures of forensic science to detect and obtain physical evidence.
  • Ability to apply crime scene measurement techniques, in sketching/reproducing crime scenes using drafting tools and computer applications.
  • Ability to perform evidence custodian duties.
  • Knowledge of County, State and Federal laws, court decisions and Departmental Procedures affecting the collection, preservation, testing and storage of evidence.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures regarding testimony, scheduling, and attorney conferencing.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of personal computers, software applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to use effective time management and project management practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to conduct business, attend meetings, or perform other assignments at locations outside the office.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Education : Associate’s degree in criminal justice, forensic science or related field; Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. forensic science or related field preferred.
  • Experience : Two (2) experience combined with five (5) law enforcement experience; or six (6) years related experience.
  • Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education, law enforcement and experience may be substituted.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CJIS Security Training obtained/maintained within six (6) months of employment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
  • Individuals appointed or promoted to a position in this class will be required to serve a probationary period of six (6) months. Performance will be carefully evaluated during the probationary period. Continuation in this class will be contingent upon successful completion of the probationary period.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • Work requires occasional strenuous effort. For example, handling moderately heavy materials or walking/climbing, sitting/standing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching/reaching in a fixed position for extended periods of time.
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts with exposure to potentially unusual environmental stress e.g., extreme outdoor weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled. The work environment involves working with dangerous chemicals and substances as well as exposing employee to infectious diseases and unknown crime scene hazards.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Prior to appointment, employees will be subject to passing and completing polygraph, extensive background investigation including but not limited to fingerprinting/criminal history/reference checking, drug screen, and medical examination.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol screening.
  • Employees in this classification are essential as defined by the County's Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.
OTHER INFORMATION:
  • This is a full time, non-exempt position.
  • Work is normally performed Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Employee be required to respond to emergency callouts outside of normal business hours.
  • Position is benefit eligible.
