05 The Role: S&P Global Commodity Insights is seeking candidates for our 10-week internship program within our Upstream Business Management team which is part of our IMPACT Program. IMPACT (Innovative Mentoring and Professional Acceleration in Commodities) is one of our many programs within Commodity Insights aimed at developing early career talent globally. The internship program will run from June 3rd to August 9th.



The Team: The Upstream Business Management team is seeking an Intern. This team works within Commodity Insights to advance the development and application of subsurface software tools and data science projects. The team is responsible for leveraging technological innovations in subsurface data science, characterization and simulation , and optimizing and applying analysis in projects like the Gulf of Mexico ( GoM ) CCS Storage initiative.

Responsibilities:
  • Work as part of a cross-functional team tasked with deploying and optimizing subsurface software tools like Kingdom, Analytics explorer, python, JUDI.jl and JutulDarcy.jl .
  • Assist in the installation and application of SLIM group's computer codes for wave-based inversion and reservoir simulations.
  • Run optimization frameworks using JutulDarcy.jl to estimate storage capacities , particularly in CCS projects.
  • Create training pairs using JutulDarcy.jl and S&P's spatially varying permeability/porosity models to train Fourier Neural Operators (FNOs).
  • Evaluate the accuracy of simulations and FNO approximations in estimating storage capacities at potential injection sites in the GoM .
  • Document processes and contributes to the development of business cases for subsurface software applications.
What We're Looking For:
  • Demonstrated understanding of subsurface modeling and simulation, particularly in the context of CCS.
  • Familiarity with reservoir simulation software and data science applications in the upstream sector.
  • Ability to work with large datasets and strong skills in software relevant to subsurface analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and navigate complex project requirements.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of business.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Pursuing a n advanced degree in geoscience, petroleum engineering, computer science, or a related field; PhD or graduate degree preferred.
